Clark Terry

Clark Terry built a six-decade career on warmth and generosity, moving from Count Basie's and Duke Ellington's trumpet sections to become one of the first Black musicians in NBC's Tonight Show band. His clean, unhurried tone and puckish scat-singing hit "Mumbles" made him one of jazz's most beloved figures, but he was just as renowned as a mentor, informally coaching younger players — including a teenage Miles Davis — long before he became famous himself.
