Sikiru Ololade Ayinde Balogun, who performed as Ayinde Barrister, transformed were — the Islamic Yoruba chants sung to rouse worshippers during Ramadan — into fuji, a full-fledged genre built on talking drums, sakara and call-and-response vocals, fronting a band he called the Supreme Fuji Commanders across more than 70 albums. Honored with Nigeria's Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2006, he remains fuji's most cited founding figure and, by his own account, one of Asake's favorite singers.
