Asa Singh Mastana
Born in 1926 near Lahore, Asa Singh Mastana became one of the most decorated voices of Heer and jugni-style Punjabi folk singing, rising to cult status alongside Surinder Kaur once All India Radio began promoting folk musicians in the mid-1960s. He won the Padma Shri in 1985 for his contributions to Punjabi music. His radio-era recordings were part of the folk diet a young Gurdas Maan absorbed growing up in rural Punjab.
