Alejo Duran
Alejandro 'Alejo' Duran, nicknamed 'El Negro Grande,' was a Colombian singer, songwriter, and accordionist from the savanna country whose earthy, driving style embodied the sabanero strain of vallenato. In 1968 he won the inaugural accordion competition of the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata, becoming the first crowned Rey Vallenato. His recordings of songs like 'Fidelina' remain touchstones of the genre's traditional, accordion-forward sound.
